How do we get started?
For the initial course and again above the DPC, every other T block should have it stalk removed. Start laying at the corners and work in to the middle alternating the "stem up" T block with the cut T block. Alternatively a plinth block can be used under the DPC.
Thereafter, working in courses, the T blocks be laid "stem up", "stem down" and so on with infill blocks used to fill the gaps in the courses. Where there are door/window openings work from opening and the corner into the middle.
Where do I take my building line off the block?
Due to the differing profiles, we suggest that the line is taken at the point where the false joints commence
Do I need to colour my mortar?
Mortar joints should either match the stonework shade or in the cases of weathered shades, match the lightest colour of the blended shade. The colour of the joints should match in with the walling
How do I clean Bradstone masonry walling?
When building Bradstone careful attention should be paid to continuous cleaning of surplus mortar on the stone face before it dries hard during the construction process.
General cleaning - it is not necessary to clean the stonework face, however if you do intend to clean the stonework, this should not be undertaken too regularly and carried out with a low power pressure washer. If the pressure is too strong and the excercise carried out too frequently this may result in damage or removal of the stonework face.
How does Bradstone masonry walling weather?
The nature, extent and visible effects of weathering will depend on the location, degree of exposure and prevailing weather conditions. Bradstone masonry walling will weather as much as natural stone exposed to the same elements.
Will Bradstone masonry walling lose its colour?
Bradstone masonry walling is manufactured using high quality pigments and the colour is blended through the entire block - if you were to split a block open you would see the colour running right the way through. The Bradstone masonry walling on a dry day will look a lighter shade and on a wet day will look darker. The colour will not disappear but the blocks will weather just like natural stone.
Is Bradstone masonry walling a cladding?
No - Bradstone masonry walling is a structural walling system. It is 100m wide and has 30N/mm2 compressive strength which means that it is a structural walling system that forms the external leaf of cavity or timber frame construction.
How do you tie Bradstone masonry walling into the block inner leaf or timber frame?
Bradstone masonry wallling is tied into the block inner leaf or timber frame in the same way as bricks or blocks as it is based on a 450mm module so that the standard wall tie positions can be achieved.
Why do I have a white bloom on the surface of some of my blocks?
This is likely to be efflorescence which is a characteristic of good quality products with high cement content and it is not a manufacturing fault. Efflorescence is the term given to crystalline or powdery deposits (normally white) which form on the surface of the concrete. The effect generally disappears with time and is in no way detrimental to the performance of the product.
Do I need to seal Bradstone masonry walling to make it weatherproof?
We do not recommend the use of sealants for this purpose unless the site is in a particularly exposed location or is near to the sea and likely to get covered in salt . As long as the building is constructed properly with joints filled and DPC laid correctly, there is no need for sealants to be used.
